Meditating in a Forest

Vlodrop, Holland • January 9, 2010 • 8 a.m.

I am sitting up in bed, in Vlodrop, Holland, a small village nestled in a deep forest in the southern tip of the country, bordering Germany … It is snowy and windy out… but I am cozy warm in my room… This is Maharishi European Research University… a center of research on meditation for 25 years…

It is very, very, very quiet out … a massive relief to body and soul after weeks of crazy, fun, inspiring, challenging, stimulating, harrowing, fulfilling travel…

I am attending a conference on Modern Science and (the ancient) Vedic Science of Consciousness… engaging to the intellect and somehow deeply satisfying to the heart…

The scientists (of both modern and ancient origin) are giving a vision of human life, and a world made far better, by harnessing the vast unused creative potential of the brain and consciousness.

Such a process will spontaneously and inevitably foster radical improvements in all areas of life, all coming from within everyone…

This has been my focus for the past 40 years–and the focus of countless others of my generation, and you younger ones who have followed…

“Change begins within” — the theme of the David Lynch Foundation—is not a cheap slogan but rather a profound truth that has reverberated throughout time.

Now, as the perfect storm converges: dwindling resources; ineffectiveness of conventional “outside in” approaches in education, health care, prison rehab, etc; and growing scientific and experiential evidence that “change begins within” does work best—the ancient maxim returns to the forefront… if even by default…

“Change begins within” means, literally, strengthening the body’s own immune system from within to prevent disease, optimizing the creative genius of the human mind from within to boost learning and improve the odds for success in life among at-risk kids, defusing the acute individual and societal stresses from within that fuel violence…

All these and more can be—and are now in isolated, but promising, instances—being addressed through technologies of consciousness…

It turns out the “secret” to addressing so many of society’s seemingly intractable ills is not in the next miracle medicine or curriculum innovation or super prison or even drone-like weapons system, but it is right behind our closed eyelids—buried deep within the unlimited intelligence of Nature at the quietest, most settled level of the human mind… really and truly…

This is not new-age mumbo-jumbo … but cutting edge neuroscience, physics, physiology, psychology… “cutting edge,” in this instance, means the cutting edge of truth… both modern and ancient…

Okay, I am going to put away my computer and sink into the Silence of this forest atmosphere for my morning meditation… Gotta take full advantage of this precious time because in a week it is back to New York City, then Washington, DC, then LA, and several stops in between…

Bye for now… And thanks, as always, for listening…

Bobby

PS I am getting questions emailed to me about meditation and the Lynch Foundation and other stuff … I will start answering them in some of these blog entries. So, if you have a question, please ask!

PPS I spoke with David on the phone last night … He was in a meeting, but took a moment to talk. He sounded so happy. He is working away on his countless film, photography, music, and painting projects… When David is creating there is no one happier… I also think he was really happy I did not ask him to do something crazy, like travel around the world…
